Vedic Mathematics (Part 1)

Instrument of Calculation

Why Vedic Mathematics?

Because Winners don't do different things, they do things differently

In this section I won't be going through the details of Vedic Mathematics, but will just take some examples on how this ancient way of calculation is going to help us. For more on this subject "Vedic Mathematics" by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirthaji is a very good book to browse.

1) To subtract any number from the number consisting of 1 followed by zeroes e.g. 100, 1000, 10000 etc.

a) 1000 - 872 = 128

To arrive at this figure you just have to subtract each figure from left by 9 and the rightmost by 10

 9  9  10
-8  7   2
---------------
 1  2   8

b) 1000 - 52 = 948

Here in such cases where we have more zeros than figure being subtracted, we have to precede it with 0

 9  9  10
-0  5   2
-------------
 9  4   8

So don’t you think this was easy !!

2) One more example is to square a number that ends in 5.

a) 65 * 65 = 4225

How fast can you do this calculation?

To get to this answer, separate the answer into 2 parts i.e. 42 & 25

the last part is always 25
to get the first part multiply the 6 of 65 with 6+1 i.e. 6*7 = 42

b) 85 * 85 = (8*9) & 25 i.e. 7225

3) Now if you still need a calculator to calculate 8 * 9, there is a simple way for that too (you will not require to remember more than 5 * 5)

a) 8 * 9 = 72

8 is 2 less than 10 whereas 9 is 1 less than 10

Make it 9 * 8 (descending order)

9 1
8 2
-----
7 2

here you have to subtract 9 - 2 or 8 - 1 (diagonally opposite) to get 7
and then multiply 2 * 1 = 2

b) 7 * 6

7 3
6 4
-----
3 12 = the 1 in 12 should be added to 3.. Hence the answer = 3+1 & 2 = 42

I will add few more ways of calculating in next posting.
